If I were Steve Jobs - The Missing Mac

I thought that I would start a new series of blog posts entailing what I would do if I were Steve Jobs and what would go and so on, I thought I would start by writing about what many people seem to think is the missing link between the iMac and the Mac Pro.

What I would be looking for in this Mac would be:

A single 2.66GHz - 2.8GHz Xeon Processor
4 RAM slots so up to 8GB of RAM
An NVidia 8600GT
2 Hard Drive Bays

With this sort of machine Apple could offer the expandability of the Mac Pro and the affordability of the iMac. This would be a great machine for people like me who maybe don’t want the high price tag of the Mac Pro.

I could see this machine priced at the £700 - £2000 mark with all the possible configurations but wouldn’t expect a monitor to come as standard.

I don’t think that it is out of the realms of possibility for them to make the missing mac, as to what they would call it I don’t know.

What would you call the missing Mac and what sort of specifications would you give it? Leave a comment or use the contact form!

Well if the spec isn’t high enough it could be the iSuck, or if the price is too high then it would be iCost. What you really want is power within a budget then you would get iDeliver.

I don’t see making another Mac in to their product line. I think if they were to it would be a laptop.

why have expandable drive bays when any idiot can connect an external firewire or usb drive. there is simply no advantage to having them.

what would be advantageous would be an upgradable video card and cpu path. the ram sockets you covered already. have a video card that you can remove and replace is no help unless you can buy an newer model and have it work. the mac video cards run different firmware usually.

Hi Matt, thanks for commenting. I would choose to have expandable drive bays for a couple of reasons. 1. You don’t have to use up that extra USB or Firewire port and two they are faster inside because as I’m sure you know, USB is and I don’t thin Firewire is either is as fast internally. You might also want to do a RAID in which you would definitely need two drive bays.

I don’t quite understand what you mean about video cards, from how I interrupted your comment you say that it is a good thing and then that there is no point in having a removable video card. I don’t think Apple would nesiccerily let you upgrade the CPU, but if it’s not soldered… :)
Once again thanks for commenting, Jonathan

If they were to make the one you’re suggesting, I would call it the ‘Mac’ as that makes sense! Except, that would be too close to iMac, and thus wouldn’t work!

I doubt they’d introduce this machine, as the iMac really fills this gap, and the Mac Mini to an extent too!
