Rumors of a D60

00154_nikon_d40x_review.jpg

I have been in the market for a DSLR for a while and have not yet taken the plunge, mainly for a couple of reasons; one, I don’t need one, all I do want is to learn about them and become more interested in photography and also because my dad very generously allows me to use his D80. However I still want to buy a DSLR for myself.

As for Canon and Nikon I’ve chose to go with Nikon because after using a 400D on several occasions I was not impressed and secondly as my dad has a Nikon, we can swap lenses. I DSLR I was looking at was the D40x, I had heard great review and most comments were that it is a great camera to start with. I was very close to taking the plunge when articles the other week starting appearing of a Nikon D60 appearing in Spring 2008. So I have decided as I am in no rush to hold off and wait.

So far there are very few details, if any and they only piece of “evidence” is that in Japan it has been removed from the site and production appears to have been halted. There are a couple of features that I would be interested in being added to the D60: Live view so when I am in awkward cases where using the view finder would be a pain I can switch to live view. The second would be a lens motor so I am not limited be the amount off lenses I can use; though I do understand that it would increase the size of the camera body, but frankly if I am going to get an SLR then the extra size is part of the package.

Until then…

I am going to get an HD Video camera so I can shoot some video for both myself and YouTube, to be exact a Canon HV20 which I have used and enjoyed, expect a post soon on what made me choose this camera.

QUESTION: Do you shoot with an SLR, if so which brand and why? Leave a comment or use the contact form.

It’s a pity you don’t give any links to the source of these rumours, Jonno. As far as I can tell there is one guy - admittedly with a little track record - and some ambiguous stuff on the Japanese website. The D60 has been rumoured for two years at least having been the forerunner apparently of the D40. Incidentally, you don’t give a source for your photo of the D40X.

My second point is equally important - you say you don’t need an SLR - so why are you getting one?

Ha, well you know I use a Canon EOS 400D, but I have also experimented with a Nikon D40x, (a friends), and I must say that I found the Nikon felt more solid, looked more balanced, particularly the back, and the shutter noise was a lot nicer, (of course, all really unimportant things realistically, when you need good image quality, but I hear the Nikon’s great there too).

I enjoy my EOS 400D, and now that I have a small collection of Canon fit lenses, I guess I’ll stick with Canon, however, I must say that in the Consumer end of the market, the Nikon seems better, in my opinion at least. However, much I enjoy my 400D.

This is really a comment of random thought, not very organised or conclusive, but still, anyway. I thought I may as well ;-) I suggest you wait for the next iteration of the Nikon, (the D60 rumor as it were), and leave Canon at bay, but it doesn’t. Actually, sorry, ignore this.

I can’t compare Nikon and Canon, I think you should be like me and simply get the best value for money and most suitable camera for you at the time of purchase, and thus stick to that brand, as to be perfectly honest, Canon, Nikon, they’re pretty much the same, however much I’ll get shot down by fanboys, more so, it’s the photographer :-)
Excuse these ramblings on your blog!

Sorry about that, I’ll edit it. When I say I don’t need one, I mean that I am in no rush to get hold of one because I can use my dads though I still intend to get one though. It would feel a bit weird buying some lenses for a camera that you don’t own!

I have the grand Nikon D50, I must say that the Nikons feel better in my hand then cannon’s they feel better built. I love my DSLR but really should get it out more often. I know how you feel, do I buy or don’t I (MacBook Pro). Wait and you will like it more when you get it.

I use a Nikon D40x. I tried a few Canons, but I preferred the feel of the Nikon. I like the D40x better than the D80 because it’s smaller and lighter. I got it instead of the D40 because of the higher burst speed as well as the resolution.

It’s still big, though. I plan to take my old Nikon L5 point-and-shoot to Macworld instead because I don’t want to fly with the D40x plus I’m afraid of something happening to it.
