iPhone Envy
I’ve always “wanted” an iPhone, but have never really come up with a reason that is strong enough to over-through what is a very hefty price tag. In fact, over 18 months, with the cheapest contract, costs you £900.
If you hadn’t noticed. That’s a lot of money for a phone.
But now it’s gotten to the point where I think (obviously, when the 3G iPhone is released) I am going to give in and say yes. But why, what has changed since the release of the iPhone to make me realize that I need one.
The biggest reason was the actual iPhone itself, before there was nothing to gauge a good and bad phone, they were all rubbish. But now you can see how good phones could be… It’s a lot harder to put up with them now.
The problem that I currently face is as to whether I am going to end up using the phone enough. Currently I don’t really use my phone very much. It’s a catch twenty-two situation. I want an iPhone because I don’t use my current phone, but I am hesitant in buying a new one because I don’t want to waste money on something that I may find out I don’t need.
But it’s not really the phone functionality that draws my towards it. I like the simplicity, the user interface, the iPod, the web browser. So even if I don’t find myself using the phone functionality, will the unlimited data plan balance things out?
I’m not sure yet, any thoughts?

The £900 price tag of the iPhone put me off when I saw the iPod Touch. Some would say “Why get the iPhone without the phone?”. My answer is that you can buy a much better phone an iPod Touch with more storage for the same price.
However, I’m pretty sure the next iPhone will make me want one all over again.
June 1st, 2008 at 8:27 pmI’m using my mobile phone first to call. I know this might sound childish… but I can’t find other uses of it. I think this is because I like to have one device per use. I certainlyprefer to have a mobile phone and a PDA, instead of having both in one case.
So… Yes the first iphone was appealing, but I read that, even if nobody used the “touch” technology before, the tech was quite old. This helped me saying : ok,I don’t need something “old”.
Price is the biggest brake for me. As I’m only calling people ( I often had free call on landline, but no free SMS, I’d used to call :), beside having someone to talk is nicer than 160 characters on a screen).
So… yes the iPhone is nice, but do I need all those extras features ? and will I use them, and… can’t I find other devices to do the same ? All these questions turned into my head. Conclusion : I still don’t have an iphone. Just a cheap LG phone with a prepaid card. Spending currently around 30 swiss franc a month for calling (I don’t have much frends yet in Switzerland). For the other features, a macbook replaced them all. Ok the laptop is larger than an ipod, but I can do more and be comfortable.
I think you have to think really, what do you use today, and not try to use somtheing you may have and could use for just 3 months. Ok, the interface is nice, easy to use, but that’s only the surface.
Why not thinking for example to an ipod touch, instead of an iphone. Difference ? well. no visual voice mail in the touch, no 900£ to give away, and a lighter contract with hte mobile operator. Or even, using your MBP is a good way.
The real question : Do I use today the features in the iPhone ? Will the iphone help me using these feature I need ? Is it really worth for that price ?
I hope I hope you a little.
On my side I unsure between replacing now my ipod 3G, and buying a Nano or a Touch.. I’ve the same questioning… Will I use all the fonctionnality of the touch, when I already have my laptop with me ?
