The Netsetter

Collis Ta’eed, of Envato, has launched a new blog called, The Netsetter, focusing on internet marketing, online business and design. So far he’s got three posts online – all interesting and informative.

I’ve been looking for a blog like this for a while, if you know of any similar – email me.

Audi On The Downturn

Audi’s CEO on the Economic Downturn –

“We heard about it, so we had a board meeting and discussed it thoroughly and have decided not to participate.”

Brilliant.

Dan Benjamin on Avatars –

Dan Benjamin on Avatars -

Even if people don’t automatically remember your name or your website, they’ll remember your avatar and make an association. When they see it again later, on another network or site, they’ll be more likely to pay attention, to friend you, and maybe remove a few of those degrees of separation.

Very true. Often when I’m looking for new people to follow on Twitter, I’ll look out for an avatar that stands out from the rest. I’m now in the process of changing all my avatars to the new same picture.

PwnYoutube

Add “pwn” to the You Tube address of a video and you can download it. It’s epic. An example: http://pwnyoutube.com/watch?v=4oAB83Z1ydE

Paul On Working Full Time

Paul Stamatiou has been blogging lately about his experiences of leaving college and working full time. With this and now Michael’s most recent article – I’m getting really excited about leaving school at getting ‘out there’.

Only issue: I’ve still got over two more years of school, and then… University.

Marble

Marble -

Based on our sources, however, Apple will apparently use Snow Leopard’s release to tweak the overall user interface for Mac OS X and unify it across applications…The codename for the new interface is said to be “Marble”.

Apple are continuing to make their user interface more refined, and as some have noticed, a total contradiction to Microsoft’s approach. Apple are stepping away from the flashy UI and going for a far more subtle look. I can’t say I really ever liked “Aqua” very much, especially within Leopard – it just looked out of place; so these are welcome changes.

The biggest interface change I’m hoping for is for all the the windows to be straight rather than curved. It drives me crazy.

The 2TB SD Card

The 2TB SD Card -

The SD association have just announced that thanks to a new standard they’ll have the capability to have up to 2TB’s of data on an SD card. Well that’s cool, but should we really care? I know that for years people have being underestimating what an average computer user will need, most famously Bill Gates; “No one will need more than 637 kb of memory for a personal computer”.

But, I think that we’re getting to the point where the various speed increases that a computer gains are becoming less and less visible to a human. I’m pretty sure that we’ll soon be getting to the point where any improvement in system power will be negligible. Camera manufacturers have stopped increasing mega-pixels and on the video side of things – it doesn’t look like we’ll be able to see the difference after 8K.

Imagine how hard it would be to fill a 2TB SD card, even if you had a 25mpxl camera. Not easy and not worth the money. I’d feel a lot more comfortable with several smaller cards.

I’m not saying that it isn’t impressive that they’ll be able to stick 2TB onto an SD card. I’m just saying – is it practical?

The Hit List Public Preview

The Hit List now has a public preview and I’m loving it. Sorry Things.

An iPhone with a keyboard?

An iPhone with a keyboard? -

“Specifically, we believe Apple could introduce a lower-end model that is slightly thicker due to the inclusion of a slider keyboard for students (texting) and business use (email) between $99 and $149.”

Why would Apple ever do this? By doing so they would be acknowledging that their touch technology isn’t as good as they promoted and be and their keyboard with they touted as better than a tactile keyboard floored. Apple can’t turn back now they’ve gone down the touch road.

Web Ratings?

MP, Andy Burnham wants to give websites film like ratings –

“There is content that should just not be available to be viewed. That is my view. Absolutely categorical. This is not a campaign against free speech, far from it; it is simply there is a wider public interest at stake when it involves harm to other people. We have got to get better at defining where the public interest lies and being clear about it.”

How can someone say that you should not be able to view some content on the internet and then say that he’s not working against free speech? The whole idea of giving websites ratings is ridiculous.

If some action has to be taken, I believe that a better, and indirect course of action would be to educate parents about the possible problems that children can run into on the net.
