On preparing to launch a podcast

wanted header picture.png

As you may or may not know I am in the process of creating my own video podcast called, Wanted (more on the actual podcast in the future). It definitely hasn’t been easy, but when was it meant to be? For me the hardest thing about video is making it look presentable and “nice” to look at. Something which can be pretty hard. But when done well can give you some excellent results.

I have decided not to take the half hearted approach and gone for the best equipment that I can afford so I can build up a “watchership” early on and be happy with what I am creating at the start.

Knowing what you want to say is important. I don’t want the videos to be too formal, but having to many “umms” really frustrates me. So I have been going through and making sure that I am going to know what I am going to say and when. Though this sounds elementary, it is forgotten a lot by podcasters.

Find the right media host is hard. Currently I am trying to decide between Podango and Blip.tv . Each of them have their own pros and cons. I prefer the Blip.tv player but I find the interface for the website confusing. I have heard great things about Podango - but you HAVE to have ads on your podcast right from that start. Something that at this stage I don’t really want.

Finally. To get the professional effect I want is going to be hard with the schedule I have. Therefore I a going for the quality instead of quantity approach. Something tells me producing one episode would take a week preparation and a whole weekend to shoot and edit. It’s not helped by the fact that I am a one man band. Host, writer, director, editor, promotor.

Its not easy and adding the element of video to a podcast. If I were to do audio ost of these probelms would probably disappear. Though I expect that as I continue to produce the podcast I will begin to work out “my way” and it will become easier as I get into a routine. It’s going to be hard, and it already is. But still I am not deterred - I have big hopes for this podcast.

What I Expect from a Podcast:

podcast-icon-small_large.gif

The podcast revolution is in full spring, new podcasts are being created every week and they are becoming more and more popular. And with this the existing podcasts have had to step up a notch to keep ahead of the game.

So with this I have bean to have new expectations for most of the podcasts that I listen to. These are; audio quality; different content and people with something to say. Without at least one of these I find it very hard to listen or keep listening (or I suppose in some cases, watch) a podcast. Currently I have iTunes open behind this window and I am subscribed to about twenty-eight podcasts. Each of them, apart from a couple tend to take a different area of (in my case) mostly technology.

For instance; I listen to MacBreak Tech for all the how-to and in depth stuff, MacBreak Weekly for the news, The Typical Mac User Podcast to hear what new switchers and sliders like me are doing, and Mac Focus to hear what mac users of about my own age think.

Each of the undoubtedly has something different to say and something different to add. I have been listening to podcasts since they were first integrated with iTunes, I (not that I count) have probably tried over one hundred and some of them just don’t stick, thats how it goes.

On audio quality; most of the time I can stand the odd guest host with a crap microphone but they really must have something good to say for me to keep doing, that buzzing is one of the banes of my existence.

I know I’m being pretty harsh, I mean my podcast Tech Today doesn’t sound fantastic, but this is where I make the exception. If people are only ten episodes in and only have fifty people downloading the episodes then it may not be worthwhile for them to go out and buy better equipment. My podcast is averaging on thirty downloads a week, if we reach a hundred or so I might see fit to go out and buy a Rode Podcaster mic.

I know that the content that I’m getting is free and I understand that it is your choice. I mean the other day, I was recording an episode for a video podcast that I am working on and the first thing they said was “sought your hair out!” and I argued, “It doesn’t matter it is a podcast” I may be being a little hypocritical about writing this post but I wanted to express my thoughts about the subject.

Anyway, after my little rant… What do you expect from a Podcast and why? Leave a comment or use the contact form!

Web Pick: Apple Universe

Apple Universe is a podcast run by my friend Daniel, it currently has a rather erratic release schedule due to his new found popularity, but 9/10 an episode is released every week. Daniel’s podcast covers Macs, iPods and software. He often has his friend Doug (see blogs I read for more info on him) on the podcast.

Believe it or not, Daniel does not actually have a Mac which just shows his dedication to the platform and I will bet anyone a fairly large sum of money that his next computer will indeed be a mac. But just because he does not have a mac doesn’t mean he is not educated in these sort of things because that is far from the truth!

So go check out Apple Universe

On another note, Daniel and I are currently working together, on a project which I am very excited about. Check back in a couple of days for more info on that!
